LAGHETTO DI TERRANERA
Gazing north, the tranquil, emerald waters of Laghetto di Terranera unfold. To the east, a different story emerges: stepped terraces, scars of a mining past, are stained with crimson. These iron-rich outcrops bleed into the landscape, their rust-coloured veins strikingly visible just above the lake’s shimmering surface — a testament to the earth’s hidden wealth and industrial history.
The area surrounding Laghetto di Terranera presents a unique and dramatic landscape, heavily influenced by its mining history. The terrain is characterized by its striking reddish and dark-hued soil, a direct result of the Hematite and Pyrite once extracted from the open-pit mine that now forms the lake basin. This gives the topography an almost otherworldly, “lunar” appearance, with colorful mineral residues staining the rocks.
This stark, mineral-rich environment is softened by the resilient Mediterranean vegetation. The vicinity of the lake is fringed with cane thickets, while the surrounding hills are cloaked in typical Mediterranean vegatation. This includes hardy shrubs and trees such as holm oaks, lentisk, and myrtle, which create a vibrant green contrast against the deeply colored earth. This juxtaposition of a post-industrial landscape with tenacious natural growth defines the remarkable character of Laghetto di Terranera. (Author: silvia)
