SPIAGGIA DI TERRANERA
The photo shows an easterly view of Spiaggia di Terranera. To the right is the famous Laghetto di Terranera. To the left is the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea and its azure blue waters. The easterly view reveals the terraced remnants of Terranera’s halcyon mining days, with a stone structure perched upon them.
Spiaggia di Terranera, a standout tourist destination on the island of Elba, presents a dramatic spectacle against the sapphire Tyrrhenian Sea. Its name, “black earth,” is no exaggeration, as the shoreline is a glittering expanse of dark, heavy sand rich with Iron oxides. This unique geological feature, a remnant of the area’s mining history, sparkles like a blanket of black diamonds under the Italian sun.
Separated from the sea by a thin isthmus, an emerald-green lake, formed in a former mining pit, adds to the serene atmosphere. Just offshore, a rugged, reddish outcrop of iron-rich rock rises from the waves, completing the stunning geological tableau. The striking contrast of the black sand and reddish rock against the clear blue water makes it a haven for photographers and nature lovers seeking a peaceful escape. The beach is also a popular spot for snorkelling, thanks to the abundant marine life and the intriguing underwater remnants of its mining past. (Author: silvia)
