Pinite - a pseudo of muscovite after cordierite crystals from the original locality, the Pini Stolln, between Aue and Schneeberg, Erzgebirge, Saxony. The mineral was named after Father Pini, the man who described the "Baveno twins" (microcline) from Baveno, Italy. One day a miner found these twins in a tunnel near Schneeberg. In donation of Father Pini this tunnel was named Pini Stolln. Below the number label you can see a Baveno twin in the granite matrix. In fact one of my collection highlights! The nicest prehnite specimen I have found, collected from a random small boulder on my last visit - I was very pleased ! The colour is a stronger green than the last specimen photo, but it is very difficult to capture.

Nice green and quite lustrous prehnite crystals forming thick crusts in very hard basalt. Open and vuggy material, often with little epimorphs(?) or casts of prehnite on calcite (presumably) to 3mm across, but the casts are hollow.

’Stalactitic’ formation of white prehnite on very hard basalt. The prehnite has most likely replaced some thin crystals of another, probably zeolitic mineral like laumontite.
