This is an example of the calcite that coats the walls, ceiling, and floor of the Crystal Cavern. The Terlingua Mercury District is characterized by breccia pipes, collapse breccias that formed just a big jumble of limestone boulders. Caves are not uncommon in the mines of the district. Lots of open cavities means good collecting. (Author: Ed Huskinson)

It was collected by Casey Jones who sold it to F. John Barlow (#5972), and was later consigned to Casey upon dissolution of the Barlow collection. (Author: GneissWare)

Calcite Gallatin Canyon, Montana, USA 17 X 10 X 6 cm This is a fine, classic Gallatin Canyon calcite specimen. It is nearly a floater, I can find only two 1-cm points of attachment from what must have been a large pocket with branching, lobular matrices in it, covered with tiny calcites. On top of those grew the large golden scalenohedrons. The largest calcite is 7.5 cm (3 inches) and is doubly terminated. All the large scalenohedrons are undamaged. The overall size of this grand specimen is 17 X 10 X 6 cm. The specimen was passed from Ronald L. Anderson of Littleton, CO to the Buckskin Booksellers of Ouray, CO. I purchased in from Robert Stouffer, also of Ouray, CO. (Author: John Nash)

Calcite in laumontite Near Beaver Bay, Lake County, Minnesota, USA 25 X 18 X 16 cm Ex-Roland Quinn, proprietor of the Beaver Bay Agate Shop at the time. Roland inherited the shop and collection from his father. This incredible specimen has a group of flat-topped pseudohexagonal calcites in a large boulder of calcite and laumontite. It clearly was a piece of a large calcite vein that broke off. The miracle is that the whole specimen looks like a water-worn rock, but the calcite crystals are pristine and undamaged, showing no signs of wear at all. Greg theorizes this must have been in a part of Lake Superior with a sandy bottom. The usual pebble bottoms would have made short work of the calcite. The largest crystal is about 6 cm across. A true Minnesota classic, rare beyond rare. (Author: John Nash)
